The Challenge
The client was struggling with modernizing and maintaining their long-standing platform without disrupting active customer engagements. This was due to:
- Platform Complexity: The platform, although functionally powerful, comprised an architecture, a codebase, and frameworks that had grown increasingly complicated over the years. Understanding and analyzing these components required significant engineering effort.
- Knowledge Gaps: Critical components of the platform were often undocumented and relied on deep institutional knowledge held by senior engineers. Onboarding new developers to scale the engineering team required time-intensive knowledge transfer and training sessions.
- Manual Testing: The internal team had to manually decipher modules and complex data flows across services, develop unit and regression test cases, and debug complex issues. Performing these operations consumed considerable time and created operational bottlenecks.
Our Solution
An AI-augmented, human-driven engineering approach was leveraged to accelerate modernization and maintenance initiatives without increasing additional overhead.
Code Navigation and Understanding
AI tools were used to analyze dynamic attribute handling, indexing services, REST API architecture, and workflow engines. The AI-assisted exploration approach was used to reduce the time spent investigating data flow between models, indexing triggers, API request processing, and workflow state transitions.
Test Case Creation and Integration
AI code assistants were integrated with Visual Studio Code to generate test cases for API endpoints, indexing logic, Ruby service classes, and workflow transitions. Test cases were validated by our experts and the internal team before being integrated into the existing CI/CD pipelines to significantly improve test coverage.
Knowledge Capture and Documentation
AI assistants were used to generate internal engineering documentation explaining data models and relationships, indexing workflows, platform architecture, and search filtering logic. The documentation was reviewed manually by the internal team to ensure accuracy and adherence to platform standards.
